Top Three Priorities When Elected:
ESTABLISH the City of Garden Ridge Emergency Management Plan
February’s arctic blast and once-in-a generation storm revealed several gaps in our contingency plans as a city. While high praise should be given to our city staff and employees for their efforts during the storm, there are still many issues to be discussed. What went right on behalf of the city? What went wrong? City Council is looking into this as a result of February’s tragic events but it will be my priority as your Mayor.
Our Emergency Management Ordinance 112-052002, was last updated in 2002. Enough has changed in 19 years to Completely rework the ordinance. Our weather events from February more than justify this priority.
We need to be ready to work in conjunction with Comal County and their Emergency Response Plan to ensure our citizens remain safe during all manner of contingencies. We need to be ready for hurricanes and/or floods where our citizens are not only without power, but stranded. What is our plan for an Active Shooter event in Garden Ridge? While our Police Department remains ready and updated for such a tragic event, how does the City of Garden Ridge support their plan and coordinate our combined efforts with Comal County?
CREATE a Director of Communications Position
Communication from the City of Garden Ridge to its residents was virtually non-existent during the arctic weather event in February. This MUST CHANGE. In fact, the only remarkable communication from the City to its citizens during our February weather crisis was from Councilwomen Lisa Swint and on her personal cell phone using her Social Media platforms and prowess. This must change.
Social Media is the primary form of communication for nearly 70% of the population. If the City of Garden Ridge is reluctant, or unable, to communicate with its citizens via Social Media, especially during an emergency, it is a Problem.
As your Mayor, I will solve this. We will have a Robust and Responsible Social Media presence. This means going from our current status of announcing certain monthly standard meetings on FaceBook to using multiple Social Media platforms in order to keep our residents informed of upcoming social events, meetings and issues.
Furthermore, I will establish a designated City of Garden Ridge Director of Communications. The duties of this individual will be to direct the communications with the local, state and national communities via all forms of media. The specifics of the position will need to be worked out with City Staff and Council. I will work with the City Council and Staff on the logistics of such a position, whether Full-time, Part-time or an Additional Duty, but it needs to happen NOW.
STREAMLINE our Planning and Zoning Processes while we
CREATE a Director of Marketing Position
Our Planning and Zoning Commission has worked diligently on our City of Garden Ridge Master Plan development to keep up with rezoning the FM 2252 corridor for responsible and desirable development. But, they need help.
As your Mayor, I will get them help. A Director of Marketing for the City of Garden Ridge could assist the Planning and Zoning Commission while reaching out to the right type of businesses we hope to occupy our main thoroughfare.
Recent feedback I received from a Garden Ridge Business suggests we have areas to improve upon in our building permit approval process.
As your Mayor, I will work with the City Staff, Council and an overworked Planning and Zoning Commission in order to streamline the building permit process so we attract the right sort of businesses, retail and restaurants who will enhance our property values and living experiences in Garden Ridge.
